If you have chosen

English Philology,

you should know that your studies will take 4 years at the BA level and 2 more years if you decide to continue at the MA level.

If you successfully complete the first four years, you are awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Philology

If you are willing to continue and are successful during the 2 other years of study, you are awarded a Master's Degree in English Linguistics

What are you going to study?

  • English phonetics—about sounds and how to pronounce them
  • English grammar—about the stucture of English
  • Academic writing—how to write essays, summaries, annotations, research papers
  • Oral skills and vocabulary—how to express yourself clearly and coherently, peculiarities of everyday and official, political, economic, academic language
  • History of the English language—why now the English language is what it is
  • Lexicography — about dictionaries and thesauruses
  • Germanic philology — what happened that we now have a number of different Germanic languages and how they are related: German, English, Swedish, Norwegian, Dutch etc.
  • Translation — why the English actual is not the same as the Lithuanian aktualus
  • Lexicology — about the word, how words are related and make up a system called vocabulary
  • English, American, Canadian old and modern literature
  • British, American, Canadian, Irish culture and civilisation
  • A second and third foreign language—Swedish, Danish, German, Dutch, French, Spanish etc.
  • General university disciplines like psychology, aesthetics, philosophy

You are going to do research and write research papers, read your reseach presentations at students' conferences.

How will you study?

  • In classs with the teacher
  • At home from books and notes
  • In libraries: at the University, British Council, American Center

You might also have an opportunity to study abroad:

  • Witihin the EU Socrates/Erasmus exchange programme. Our students usually go to the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, Finland and Swedish universities.
  • Some students go for summer courses in Britain
  • Study in USA and Canada within several different programmes

You will also be able to participate in the Lithuanian-British, Lithuanian-American, Lithuanian-Irish, Lithuanian-Canadian Associations.

When you don't study, you could be involved in the preparation for our Christmas party, be active in the students' society, participate in BA graduates' get-together in Stanevičius courtyard

After you graduate, you could be employed by:

  • Publishing houses
  • Translation bureaus
  • Schools and universities
  • Ministries and departments
  • The Parliament of the LR
  • Travel agencies
  • Business companies
  • Cultural institutions

If you are interested in studying languages and getting to know about the English language, how it developed, how it is structured, about British, American, Canadian history, literature, culture, if you have a natural thirst for knowledge, come to study to our Department.
