Franks & Pereltsvaig 2004, Ajíbóyè 200... more abstractIn this paper, we present syntactic and semantic arguments that, in at least one articleless language (Lithuanian), bare nouns are able to project either NP or DP structures (cf. Franks & Pereltsvaig 2004, Ajíbóyè 2006, Pereltsveig 2006). We show that, in some syntactic contexts, Lithuanian bare nouns are only able to receive definite interpretations; in one context, they are only interpreted indefinitely. We then tie these interpretations to the presence or absence of D. Further, we highlight problems with the view that there is a categorical difference between articleless (NP) and articleful (DP) languages (Bošković 2010; Despić 2011), by testing Bošković’s and Despić’s generalizations about NP vs. DP languages on Lithuanian. In both cases, Lithuanian ends up behaving somewhat like an NP language, and somewhat like a DP language. Lithuanian is therefore a counterexample to the NP/DP split posited by Bošković, and must receive a different analysis.

Our study fills th... more abstractAbstract While m-reduplication in colloquial Turkish has been observed in a variety of sources (Göksel & Kerslake 2005, Müller 2004, Underhill 1976, among others) it has not been examined closely. Our study fills the gap. We survey the behaviour of m-reduplication across different categories and take into account discourse restrictions. We argue that m-reduplication is a case of lexical number (cf. Wiltschko 2008), specifically, it is a case of similative number in the sense of Daniel & Moravcsik (2014).

For a long time, grammatical gender has been viewed solely as a feature inherent to nouns and necessary to track agreement between noun and other elements within an utterance (Aikhenvald 2003; Hockett 1958; Corbett 19... more abstractFor a long time, grammatical gender has been viewed solely as a feature inherent to nouns and necessary to track agreement between noun and other elements within an utterance (Aikhenvald 2003; Hockett 1958; Corbett 1991). However, since the seminal article of Ritter (1991), other uses and characteristics of gender as an abstract feature have been brought to light. For example, gender has been argued to play a role in numeral classification (Mathieu 2012), or serve as an expression of speaker perspective (Armoskaite & Wiltschko 2012; Gerdts 2011). This study focuses on the role of gender in the derivation of nouns. Based on Lithuanian (Baltic), the paper argues that gender may derive nouns from nouns, adjectives and verbs.
