NON-RUSSIANS' STRUGGLES IN RUSSIAN PUBLISHING IN THE IMPERIAL PERIOD

The nineteenth century was a period when the publishing business was growing in the Russian Empire. It was accompanied by severe censorship by the state, and the Lithuanian and Ukrainian press were entirely banned. Despite this suppression, we can still find non-Russian figures in Russian-language publishing at the time. In this talk, we will trace the "struggles" of three individuals -- a journalist of Polish-Lithuanian origin, a Polish bookseller, and a Ukrainian illustrator -- whose cases will serve as a basis for decentering the publishing history in the Imperial period.
