Climate change discourse in UK and US news media: representing uncertainty and time
Abstract
Climate change is one of the major issues of our times and is regularly represented in media discourse. The latest findings of climate science have been summarized in the successive reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which have also provided future scenarios of the detrimental effect of rising temperatures for the years to come. The publication of the IPCC reports is generally taken up by the media which ‘translate’ the language of climate science for the general public. The issue of uncertainty is particularly interesting in this respect as the concept is interpreted differently by different audiences, i.e., scientists, journalists, the general public, etc. In addition, the question of time, in particular future projections of climate change, is relevant in climate change discourse and may be represented differently by different actors.
This presentation discusses how uncertainty is represented by climate science media reports connected to the publication of the last two IPCC reports. In addition, it looks at the temporal frames connected to climate change, but also the uncertainties connected with it. The presentation applies ecocritical discourse analysis and takes a qualitative approach.
