Gruodžio 3 d., penktadienį, 15.00 val. 314B aud. kviečiame bendruomenę į BKKI seminarą, kuriame dr. Vuk Vukotič kalbės tema What does linguistics have to offer theories of ethnicity and nationalism?

Anotacija:

Linguists working in transdisciplinary fields (discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, media linguistics) have borrowed extensively from anthropology and sociology to explain linguistic facts. In particular, theories of ethnicity and nationalism have been useful to explain the complexities of language on a communal level to the historical-ideological process of standardization, the construction ‘national’ languages with their grammars and dictionaries. Conversely, scholars of ethnicity and nationalism have not been as wise to enrich their own theories with linguistic insight.

The principal aim of this talk will be to present an overview of theories of ethnicity and nationalism with regards to their treatment of language, in most of which language figures prominently as one of the key factors in the construction of ethnic and national identities. Unfortunately, as the review will show, the analysis of ‘language’ in these theories is very often reduced to a single aspect of language (most often written language), and in my view does not do justice to the language as complex socio-psychological phenomenon. Due to the central role language plays in ethnic and national identities, I have attempt a construction of what I have tentatively called the four peoplehood functions of language: the parts of the totality of language that figure in the creation or separation of ethnic and national identities. The four functions are the communicative, the indexical, the autoreificational and the (hetero)doxic. These are illustrated on historical nation-building processes in Serbia, Norway and Lithuania.
